ESAs are not for people for physical disabilities
You read that right.
If you have a physical disability and you want to keep an ESA for help then I have got bad news for you.
An ESA is not for you. You are probably wondering why? Why can’t you keep an ESA as it might help you in many ways?
Well, if you want to understand this then you will have to understand the concept and idea behind keeping an ESA.
So, the question that you should be asking yourself is…
What is an ESA?
ESA. This stands for emotional support animal. Emotional. Not physical.
This means that an ESA is only there to provide you with emotional support. So, if you are suffering from depression then you can get an ESA dog to cheer you up. If you have anxiety then you can get another animal for it.
The thing is… if being around an animal helps to elevate the symptoms of a mental illness, then you can keep that animal as an ESA.
So, what about me?
If your physical disability has led you to have some emotional issues then you might be able to get an ESA.
I say MIGHT because I can’t know for sure.
Only a licensed mental health professional, like a therapist can tell you for sure if you need an ESA or not. If yes, then they will give you an esa letter for housing. So, if you have emotional troubles then you can contact a therapist.
But for your physical disability… you need something else.
Yes, you can keep an animal for your physical disability.
But that animal is not an ESA.
That is a service animal that helps you around and generally makes life a bit easier for you. Usually, a service animal is a dog and this dog is used for a number of reasons.
You must have seen blind people who make use of a dog to cross a road. That is a service dog. It has been trained specially so that it can assist a blind person in traffic.
Similarly, dogs are trained to bring medicines to their owners if the human feels sick.
It all depends on the nature of the sickness.
So, which animal do I need?
depends.
If you want an animal that can help you with your physical disability then you want a service animal.
But, if you are facing emotional issues like depression, anxiety, or even heightened levels of emotion then you should look for an ESA.
Can I get both?
I mean… why not?
Like I mentioned above, if you have a physical disability that is causing you some emotional trouble then it is possible that you may get both a service dog and an ESA.
So, if a person cannot walk properly, they might need the help of a service dog to steady them. So, this ensures that this person gets a service dog.
But having a physical disability is extremely difficult to deal with. Many people have reported that they feel ashamed or isolated from others due to their physical disability.
But a service dog can’t help with that!
So, this is where an ESA comes in!
Is a service dog an ESA too?
Nope!
A service dog is not an ESA. This means that your dog can either be a service dog of an ESA. Not both.
This is because different types of laws apply to these animals. Like the laws for a service dog are not the same as the laws for an ESA!
Some of them might overlap, but many of them are different so we need to differentiate between a service animal and an emotional support animal.
So can I keep two animals?
Absolutely!
Most state laws allow you to keep at least two pets in your household.
And the best part is that these laws apply to pets and pets alone. Not ESAs, not service animals.
So, if you already have a pet in your house, even then you can keep an ESA and a service dog because these special animals do not count as pets.
So, you can even keep more than two animals.
So, how do I get an animal to help me?
Whether you want a service dog or an ESA, you will need permission from your healthcare provider.
But getting an ESA is super easy.
The process here is this…
You need to find an online website which can help you facilitate the process. Since most of us do not have a personal therapist, we need to get in touch with a total stranger. We provide you a guide to help you tackle this problem and find the apartment where you can be assured of living with your pet with no landlord or neighbors giving you any trouble for how to get an esa.
Well, it's a good thing that the internet exists.
Absolutely.
If you need an ESA then you need to select the animal that you want to make your ESA and find a website online. Be wary of fraudulent websites that claim to provide you the esa letter for a parakeet in no time or you’ll end up wasting a lot of money.
This is where you will fill a simple form that will take in information about you and your intended ESA. The website will do all the hard work then. They will get in touch with a licensed therapist and that therapist will contact you.
Then, you get to have a session with them! In this session you can tell them that you want an emotional support animal letter or to travel abroad.
The medical professional will evaluate you and decide if you will get the esa letter for housing.
If you are eligible… you will possess the power of Thor!
Or you will get something even better… your very own ESA!
